A Living Chapter of Reggae History

Few names embody the evolution of British reggae quite like Anthony Brightly.

Born in Hackney, East London, to Jamaican parents George and Millicent Brightly, Anthony grew up during the formative years of Britain's Windrush generation. His father's legendary Sir George Sound System immersed him in reggae culture from childhood, exposing him to some of Jamaica's greatest artists while teaching him the business behind the music.

While still attending school, Brightly became the keyboard player for a young band that would eventually become Black Slate, a group destined to redefine UK reggae.

What began as a school band soon evolved into one of Britain's most respected reggae outfits, blending authentic Jamaican roots with the unique cultural experiences of Black Britain. Their socially conscious anthem "Sticks Man" became a defining record of the late 1970s, reportedly selling more than one million copies across Europe while establishing Black Slate alongside legendary UK reggae bands such as Steel Pulse, Aswad, and Misty In Roots. From Black Slate to Global Recognition

The story of Black Slate is much more than chart success.

The band became the preferred backing musicians for visiting Jamaican reggae royalty including Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Leroy Smart, Johnny Clarke, The Heptones, and Errol Dunkley, while also contributing to timeless recordings for artists such as Pablo Gad and Carroll Thompson.

Their crossover smash "Amigo" broke barriers by becoming one of the first reggae songs performed by a UK-based Black band on the iconic television programme Top of the Pops, propelling Black Slate onto international stages where they toured alongside reggae legends including Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and The Wailers. Today, Black Slate remains recognized as one of the pioneering forces behind Britain's reggae identity, with Anthony Brightly continuing to perform and record with the group. (Wikipedia)

The Vision Behind "Pure Silk"

Anthony Brightly's influence reaches far beyond performing.

Recognizing the challenges independent artists faced in the music industry, he established Pure Silk, a production identity that became synonymous with quality Lovers Rock recordings throughout the 1990s.

Working with celebrated vocalists including Ken Boothe, Carroll Thompson, Winston Reedy, Winsome, Trevor Hartley, Wendy Walker, and many others, Pure Silk became one of the UK's most respected reggae production brands.

Later, Brightly embraced Christianity and pioneered what he described as "Lovers Gospel," blending gospel messages with the unmistakable warmth of Lovers Rock while producing renowned choirs such as the London Community Gospel Choir.

Entrepreneur, Cultural Leader and Storyteller

Anthony Brightly's career extends well beyond music.

Throughout the decades he has managed successful clubs, operated influential sound systems, established record labels, promoted artists, developed festivals, and invested in tourism after relocating to Antigua.

In recent years, he has also ventured into filmmaking, helping bring the powerful production "The Sticksman Record" to audiences while celebrating Black Slate's remarkable legacy through their Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Even in 2026, Brightly continues to release new music under the Pure Silk banner, demonstrating that his creative journey is still evolving. (Apple Music - Web Player)
